In 1988, the Department of Biology was established as part of the Zhambyl Pedagogical Institute on the basis of the Department of Civil Defense. Associate Professor Dulkairova Z. A. was appointed head of the department. In 1996-1998, the Department of "Natural Sciences", and in 1998, in order to consolidate the institutes, it was merged with Zhambyl University, Zhambyl Institute of Technology and Zhambyl Hydro-Reclamation Construction Institute and renamed Taraz State University named after M. H. Dulati. The Department of Biology and Ecology has been established as part of the University.

At the beginning of 2001-2002, the Department of Biology was separated from the Department of Biology and Ecology.

   In 2004, by decree of the Ministry of Education and Science of Kazakhstan, the Taraz State Pedagogical Institute was allocated from the M. H. Dulati Taraz State University. The Department of Biology at Taraz State University was headed by PhD, Professor A. E. Danebekov.

The purpose of the department is to train highly qualified biologists with knowledge and competencies in the Kazakh and foreign biological fields and meeting the needs of higher education institutions and secondary education institutions.

The department is based on joint educational and research projects, European experience, teaching undergraduates, graduate students and selecting research topics through international relations.
